'Equal Pay' bill advances at Legislature

BATON ROUGE -- A bill that outlines the "Equal Pay for Women Act of Louisiana," Senate Bill 334, received approval by a Senate committee Wednesday morning in Baton Rouge. It moves next to the full Senate.
Louisiana has the second largest wage gap in the nation between men and women, and some lawmakers are aiming to change that.
Last year, state lawmakers favored a bill -- which became law -- that outlines equal pay for state employees. Proponents are pushing for a law that applies to all employees.
Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, D-New Orleans, is the bill's sponsor.
The bill is opposed by several groups that represent businesses in the state. Several cards were submitted to the committee in opposition, but no opponent chose to speak out.
The bill has been proposed at the Legislature for years, but has never been approved.
