DeRidder man creates historical downtown walking tour

BY ELONA WESTON
DERIDDER -- A DeRidder history enthusiast has mapped a walking tour that includes 22 points of interest in the city's downtown area.

Roy Ades, an Army retiree and former director of the Beauregard Parish Tourist Commission, spent months researching stops along the tour.

Highlighted are sites like Hooks Uptown Theater, the first USO, Hanging Jail, Beauregard Museum, Standard Building, Long-Bell Park and others.
Tour information will be unveiled at the City of DeRidder's "Downtown at Sundown" event Thursday from 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. at the Amerisafe Pavilion.
It features live music. Find more information HERE.

"I kept discovering things and it just all fell in place," said Ades of the tour. "A lot of these, you have to use your imagination. A lot has changed."

Ades, 82, has lived in DeRidder since 1966.

"I like the people. I was in the
Army. They were very hospitable to my family when I had to go over to Vietnam," he explained.

Ades will be available to answer tour-related questions during Thursday's event.
