Local artist making splash with 'iPhoneography'

BY ELONA WESTON

LEESVILLE -- A local artist is making a splash in online art groups around the globe, using his iPhone to create one-of-a-kind photography.

The artist is Joel Aversing, and the art is called iPhoneography.

Joel got an iPhone around four years ago. He began taking photos and playing around with apps.

"It's like having Photoshop in the palm of your hand," he said.

Joel found a site called iphoneart.com.

"I said, 'this is really cool.' I kind of matured and got out of the silly stuff and started doing things I like," he said.

Joel has always had an interest in art.

"I was that art guy -- whether it be painting, sculpting, ceramics -- you name it, I did it," he said.

Joel now has about 70 apps on his phone. His art has been featured in shows in California, and he even writes for an art blog, based in Seattle.

"It's cathartic. I do it because I like to do it. I share it with like-minded people. It's a community, really," he said.

You can see more of Joel's art HERE.
