Officials eye joint Beauregard, Vernon economic development panel

VERNON PARISH -- Officials in Beauregard and Vernon parishes are looking to form a joint economic development panel.
Leesville Mayor Robert Rose said the idea was a suggestion by the Louisiana Development Ready Communities Program.
"It just makes sense," Rose said. "To collectively meet and discuss economic development opportunities."
Rose said the goal will be to have an office with a staff member who works toward expanding and promoting business.
"Treating the two parishes as one," Rose said.
Rose said Vernon and Beauregard parishes are split when it comes to economic development coalitions. Vernon Parish is grouped with the Central Louisiana area and Beauregard is grouped with Southwest Louisiana.
"And those economic development groups are both great organizations but we realize we are on the fringes of their areas," Rose said.
The board was discussed by Beauregard Parish police jurors on Tuesday. No action was taken, but members of the parish's economic development committee discussed the date of a future meeting.
Officials' next meeting, which has yet to be scheduled, will be to discuss funding of the endeavor, Rose said.
