Smith's military burn pit registry bill signed into law

BATON ROUGE -- A bill by Sen. John Smith, R-Leesville, that proposed the establishment of a registry of service members, past and present from the Gulf War on, who have been exposed to burn pits during airborne operations, has been signed into law.

Senate Bill 538 -- now Act 312 -- outlines that the state Department of Veterans Affairs monitor studies related to the treatment of conditions associated with exposure to airborne chemicals and fumes.

Other states have similar measures in place.

It also outlines that a public information program be maintained in order to educate affected service members about possible treatments and disability-related compensations that may be available.
