VPSO releases 2013 crime statistics

LEESVILLE -- The Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office has released its statistics for Jan. 1, 2013 through Dec. 31, 2013.

According to Sheriff Sam Craft, the department responded to a total of 10,895 calls.

Craft said the calls ranged from 911 hang up calls and calls for assistance to major crimes including thefts, robberies and homicides.

During the course of the 2013 year, the statistics for major crimes included:

621 thefts;

52 burglaries;

10 robberies; and

One homicide.


Craft said during the course of the 2013 year, statistics also include responses to various types of other calls to include:

437 calls for assistance;

574 accidents;

191 domestic disturbances;

461 property damage calls;

506  suspicious vehicle/persons; and


796 disturbances (other than domestic).

Deputies and detectives with the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office initiated a total of 960 arrests for the 2013 year, Craft said.

The Vernon Parish Narcotics Task Force initiated eight arrests in connection with possession of cocaine, 95 arrests in connection with possession of marijuana, and 50 arrests in connection with the possession of other illegal narcotics, for a total of 180 arrests.

Deputies with the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office initiated 134 narcotics-based arrests for a total of 314 drug related arrests for 2013.

Craft said the Vernon Parish Narcotics Task Force also investigated three separate marijuana grow sites in the western section of the parish leading to the destruction of approximately 40,000 marijuana plants worth an estimated $60 million dollars.

Craft said the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office Civil Department processed and served 13,291 civil papers, subpoenas and civil citations.
