'Colors for a Cause,' benefiting Hope Village, deemed success

DERIDDER -- The "Colors for a Cause" run, benefiting Hope Village in DeRidder, took place Saturday at the Beauregard Parish Fairgrounds.

The run was the idea of Madison Hopper, DeRidder High School student body president. She wanted to get her school involved in something worthwhile.

Hopper reached out to other schools, including Singer, Merryville, South Beauregard, East Beauregard and Rosepine High Schools.

Planning began in November and paid off last weekend as 360 people registered for the run.

As part of the event, participants wore white shirts and were pelted with colored cornstarch along the route.

By the time it was done, no one was unscathed -- even pets had been doused with the harmless, biodegradable colors.

Twenty-one sponsors helped make the event the largest 5K run ever held in Beauregard Parish. A total of $8,000 was raised for Hope Village, a centralized location along U.S. 171 in DeRidder for non-profits that help families in need.
