Police jurors to mull road damage measure

DERIDDER -- Beauregard Parish police jurors want an ordinance that would require water districts to obtain a permit before their workers cut into a parish road.

Police Juror Gerald McLeod, who chairs the Police Jury's legislative committee, said some parish roads have been damaged by workers.

"The water districts go out and do whatever to roads without telling the Police Jury. I propose an ordinance that they do not cut up a ditch until they contact us and get a permit," he said.

Tayra Dehoven, the panel's secretary-treasurer, said franchise agreements prohibit such road damage by telephone companies.

Police jurors directed Bobby Hennigan, parish manager, to draft an ordinance for consideration. It will be taken up next month.
