DeRidder Mayor: City pool won't open this summer, plans for new pool progressing

DERIDDER -- DeRidder Mayor Ron Roberts on Monday said the city pool won't open this summer and that plans for a new pool are progressing.
According to the mayor, the city pool, built in 1951, cannot continue to pass federal safety requirements. Roberts said that the pool's water filtration system had failed and cannot feasibly be repaired.
"We're told that if you can get 35 years out of a pool you're doing well," he said during Monday's City Council meeting. "We've gotten over 60 out of ours."
Roberts said the city plans to build the new saltwater pool on the same site as the current one, at P.W. West Park. He said it will be almost twice the size of the current one.
A final meeting on the new pool plans will take place later this week.
