Auditors: Typo causes $600K worth of taxes to be mistakenly collected in Merryville

MERRYVILLE -- According an independent audit report released publicly Monday by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor's Office, the Town of Merryville was still collecting on two 1 percent tax propositions that expired in June 2007.
Auditors say around $600,000 was collected.
However, the report states that a typographical error led to the collection of the funds.
The error said the tax expired in June of 2017 instead of 2007.
The report also states that various administrations were unaware that the expiration date had passed. The report also noted some budget adoption issues.
In a response, town officials say they are addressing the issues.
