A health snapshot of every parish in Louisiana -- and every county in the nation -- is measured in rankings as part of an annual university study released recently.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation publishes the rankings in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute.
The rankings are by "Health Outcomes" and "Health Factors."
"Outcomes" are measured considering length of life and quality of life. "Factors" are measured by behaviors -- such as drinking, smoking, obesity, etc. Clinical care as well as social, economic and environmental factors are also considered.
Parishes are ranked 1-64 in each category. Top-ranking parishes for health include St. Tammany, Plaquemines and Lafayette parishes. Lowest ranking parishes include Bienville, Tensas and East Carroll.
In "Health Outcomes," Beauregard Parish ranks at 20 out of 64 parishes. In "Health Factors," Beauregard ranks at 17 out of 64 parishes.
In "Health Outcomes," Vernon Parish ranks 14 out of 64 parishes. In "Health Factors," Vernon ranks 21 out of 64 parishes. Last year, however, Vernon ranked second out of 64 parishes in "Health Outcomes."
In "Health Outcomes," Allen Parish ranks 21 out of 64 parishes. In "Health Factors," Allen ranks 39 out of 64 parishes.
