War Memorial Civic Center to honor Velmer Smith

DERIDDER -- The public is invited to the DeRidder War Memorial Civic Center for the unveiling of "A Tribute to Velmer Smith" on Thursday, June 5.

Recently deceased, Smith was a highly respected historian and was responsible for highlighting and recording items concerning noteworthy people, places and things in the community and state.

The Civic Center is the home of the first off-post USO and a War Room Museum, the latter having been donated to the Civic Center by Smith.

The event will be held in the World War II display area on Thursday between the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Following the unveiling, the display will remain open to the public through the months of June and July during normal business hours.

Admission is free and the Civic Center is open daily, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It is located at 250 West 7th Street, across from Beauregard Memorial Hospital.
