Pitkin man booked in elderly woman's shooting death

RAPIDES PARISH -- A Pitkin man has been booked on first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 74-year-old Glenmora woman, his mother, authorities say.

According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, 52-year-old Rodney Thompson was booked on first-degree murder in the case.

Authorities say at around 5 a.m. Saturday, July 5, deputies from the Glenmora RPSO Sub-station responded to what was reported as a victim of a gunshot wound in the 200 block of Freedom Road in Glenmora.

Authorities say deputies received a report from Oakdale Police Department that a man had came to the department and reported the shooting.

When deputies made forced entry to the home, they found an elderly woman, Gennieve D. Ashworth, with a gunshot wound.

Aid was rendered until Acadian Ambulance arrived and transported Ashworth to an Oakdale hospital.

Authorities say, at that time, Thompson was taken into custody and booked on attempted first-degree murder.

Ashworth, however, died Sunday and Thompson's charge was upgraded.

Thompson remains in the Rapides Parish Detention Center, held without bond.

The investigation continues.
