Retail alcohol permit approved for pharmacy

LEESVILLE -- A retail alcohol permit was green-lighted Monday by the Leesville City Council.

CVS Pharmacy sought a Class "B" permit for packaged, off-premise consumption only.

The pharmacy is located at 100 East Fertitta Boulevard.

The vote was unanimous.

The council recently adopted an amendment to a city ordinance that governs retail alcohol sales. It provided an exception for drug stores/pharmacies selling alcohol, under certain guidelines.

The ordinance change also outlined that a temporary license -- valid for only 60 days -- be issued for new retail drug stores/pharmacies "without prior business experience" to "allow the establishment to make such a determination" regarding gross sales.

Earlier this year, the panel decided to table a resolution approving the application of a retail alcohol permit for CVS Pharmacy amid questions over the distance requirement. A church, Knowledge of the Word Ministries, is at 202 East Fertitta Boulevard -- within 300-feet.

The city's ordinance, which governs both low content and high content alcohol, mirrored state law, which calls for a 300-foot buffer zone near churches, schools, day cares, playgrounds and public libraries. Distances, under state law, are measured from property line to property line.
