Groundbreaking planned in coming weeks for new South Polk Elementary School

VERNON PARISH -- The groundbreaking ceremony for the new South Polk Elementary School could come as early as next month.

According to Vernon Parish Schools Superintendent James Williams, a tentative date for the event is set in August.

Last month, Tudor Construction Inc., of Alexandria, was awarded the bid for the project. The company submitted the lowest bid -- totaling around $16.9 million.

Perry Watson of Yeager, Watson & Associates, of Alexandria, is the project architect.
Preliminary work is underway.

The Defense Department, in 2012, announced it awarded an $18 million grant to the Vernon Parish School District to build a new elementary school at Fort Polk on La. 467.

The school district is managing the $21.1 million project that includes $3 million in local funds to replace the school.
