Groundbreaking planned Aug. 14 for new South Polk Elementary School

FROM STAFF REPORTS
VERNON PARISH -- The groundbreaking ceremony for the new South Polk Elementary School is set at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 at the site of the new school at 3329 La. 467 in Leesville.

In June, Tudor Construction Inc., of Alexandria, was awarded the bid for the project. The company submitted the lowest bid -- totaling around $16.9 million.

Perry Watson of Yeager, Watson & Associates, of Alexandria, is the project architect.
Preliminary work is underway.

The Defense Department, in 2012, announced it awarded an $18 million grant to the Vernon Parish School District to build a new elementary school at Fort Polk on La. 467.

The school district is managing the $21.1 million project that includes $3 million in local funds to replace the school.

The site is located south of Northwestern State University, across from the Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.
